Dylan Rosa settled into a groove after a shaky start and Phil Kunsa slugged his 11th and 12th home runs of the season Saturday as Providence pulled away for a 9-3 win over Lincoln-Way North in the Class 4A Andrew Sectional final.
Lincoln-Way North will make its first appearance at state and is the first team from the Southland to reach the Final Four in 3A since Sandburg finished second in 2010. No Southland school has won a state championship in girls soccer in the history of the state tournament, which dates to 1988.
Bethany Dombkowski’s diving stop started a second round of penalty kicks, and Andrea Prado followed with the sudden death game-winner that sent Lincoln-Way North past Lyons 2-1 in the Class 3A Lewis University Supersectional in Romeoville.
After two consecutive sectional final losses, Lincoln-Way East finally broke through and reached the state quarterfinals with a 25-20, 25-9 victory over Lincoln-Way North at the Marist Sectional on Tuesday.
