Lemont found itself in unfamiliar territory after Jake Latz allowed his first two earned runs of the season in the second inning Saturday against Lincoln-Way West. But Latz and the Indians battled back for a 6-2 victory in the Class 3A Joliet Catholic Regional title game.
Kiley Zajdzinski hit a 2-2 pitch over the left-field fence in the bottom of the eighth for a three-run walkoff home run, giving Manteno a 7-4 victory in Class 3A Lincoln-Way West Regional final against the host Warriors. It was the first regional title for the No. 1 Panthers (35-1) since 2005.
With the shootout tied at 3-3, Brianna Heyer calmly struck a line drive to her right and into the net for the game-winning goal as the Warriors outlasted the Titans 1-0 in a Class 2A Lincoln-Way West Sectional semifinal in New Lenox.
Lincoln-Way North led 5-4 at halftime and pulled away after the break for an 11-6 win over Lincoln-Way West in a Lincoln-Way Central Sectional quarterfinal. Lincoln-Way East, Andrew, and Lincoln-Way Central also advanced.
Lincoln-Way Co-op's Caleb Hong is the only Southland gymnast to qualify for the all-around at the state finals on Friday, which will be hosted by Hinsdale Central after spending the last five years at Lincoln-Way East.
