From those who impressed, including downstate stars, big names, hidden gems and out-of-state phenoms, NY2LA's Summer Jam was one of July's best. Here is all the City/Suburban Hoops Report took from the event last weekend in Wisconsin.
After having a slow start to the year, South Elgin has turned things around. Meanwhile, St. Charles North looks to have shaken off some midseason doldrums. The teams will square off Thursday in a Class 4A sectional semifinal.
St. Charles East coach Kelly Horan can’t help but be impressed by the four teams left standing at this year’s Class 4A Bartlett Sectional. Glenbard North, Conant, and St. Charles’ East and North are seeded first through fourth at Bartlett.
Burlington Central's Lucas Ege rebounded in the 300-meter finals Saturday at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium to win the first individual state championship in 10 years. Ege completed an undefeated season in the intermediate hurdles with his winning time of 37.34 seconds.
Lucas Ege won his flight races in the 110 and 300 hurdles at the Class 2A state prelims on Friday, and also was a member on Burlington Central's 400 and 1,600 relay teams that qualified for Saturday's finals.
The first day of the IHSA boys tennis state tournament went exactly as planned for St. Charles East’s Jasper Koenen. The Michigan-State bound senior cruised through his three singles matches on Thursday to advance to Friday’s round of 16 held at Hersey.
Kellie Santo Paolo and Shannon Rasmussen scored on great shots from distance and the Saints overcame a lengthy storm delay and serious injuries to Hannah Rawson and Rion Gaffney to upset top-seeded St. Charles North 2-1 on Tuesday at the Class 3A Conant Sectional semifinals.
