Among the large field of qualifiers for the Class 3A state track meet at Eastern Illinois, it wouldn’t be a surprise if a Southland champion or two emerged from the field events and Thornton came home with a trophy.
After Briana Driver anchored Mother McAuley’s 800-meter relay to first place, a Thornton runner asked Driver who she was and where she came from. Driver, a Class 3A sectional champion last year in the long jump, likely won’t be anonymous to her competition much longer.
Thornton scored 71 points to win the boys meet over Homewood-Flossmoor (44) and Lincoln-Way North (35) at the Homewood-Flossmoor triangular. H-F won the girls competition with 61 points ahead of Thornton (58.5) and Lincoln-Way North (25.5).
Homewood-Flossmoor built a 32-19 halftime lead, saw a 12-point advantage vanish in the third quarter, then rallied in the final minute of the game for a 49-45 victory to win the Class 4A Lincoln-Way Central Regional. Tai Odiase finished with a game-high 16 points.
Leslie Wilson scored 19 points to lead Thornton past Lockport 66-45 in a Class 4A Lincoln-Way Central Regional semifinal. Brian Davis, who replaced the injured Justin Taylor in the starting lineup, added 15 points and nine rebounds in the win.
Jamani Pierce scored 15 of his game-high 17 points in the first half, and Da’Marques Turner added 14 points as No. 20 Thornton led by 23 at halftime and coasted to a 73-38 victory against host Lincoln-Way West Friday.
