Peotone’s stingy defense came up with three big fourth-down stops on the way to shutting out Sandwich 13-0. The Blue Devils’ offense also effectively ate huge chunks of game clock to help deny the Indians many offensive opportunities.
At the 8:37 mark of the fourth quarter, Sandwich (2-4, 2-2) had driven 65 yards to the Peotone 15. The Blue Devils (4-2, 3-1), led by Issac Battiato, stuffed Austin Breunig on a fourth-and-3 to preserve the 13-0 edge. Peotone followed with a possession that lasted the remainder of the game.
The entire Peotone defensive unit. Kody Randa did his best with 41 yards on seven rushing attempts in the second half for Sandwich. Jake Rapson had 71 yards on 10 carries for the Blue Devils and Joey Janutis had a long kickoff return which led to Rapson’s one-yard TD for the 13-0 lead.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Peotone offensive unit’s scoring drive in the first half took more than nine minutes off the clock, and their 8:37 fourth-quarter possession clinched the win.
“We knew we had to stop them. We read the guards right and everybody got to the ball. Big plays like that are momentum-boosters, and we carried our momentum through the whole game.” — Battiato
