Needing a win to become playoff eligible, Morgan Park (5-4) scored 16 unanswered points to close out the Public League playoff first round game at Stagg Stadium.
Seeing a 21-6 lead dwindle to 21-20, Morgan Park’s defense held Harper, forcing a punt from deep within its own territory. Morgan Park senior Charles Bournes returned the punt 39 yards down to the five-yard line. Two plays later, Bournes punched it into the end zone for a one-yard score. The Mustangs converted a two-point attempt to go up 29-20 in the third.
Bournes racked up four touchdowns for Morgan Park, three rushing scores (2, 18, 1 yard) and a 76-yard kickoff return, finishing with 44 yards on 12 carries. The touchdown return was the 18th of his four-year varsity career.
BY THE NUMBERS
Jevaughn Morgan’s 40-yard interception return later in the third blew open a close game, putting Morgan Park up 37-20 following a two-point conversion. David Harvey had a one-yard keeper score for Harper (6-3) with Sandillo Wright adding an 85-yard kickoff return.
“We wanted to play hard, play aggressive. I was a little upset on the punt return getting stopped by my own teammate, but we were in the right spot to score the touchdown a couple plays later.” -- Bournes
