Oak Lawn got out to a 20 point lead after the first quarter and cruised to an easy 75-38 win over Romeoville in its own Christmas tournament Monday. Brianna Markusic and LaTondra Brooks each scored 20 points in the win.

Oak Lawn senior Brooke Annerino is a very talented scorer.

Nothing makes the Spartans point guard happier, though, than helping 6-foot Brianna Markusic and 6-1 Jannah Mahmoud pile up points.

“I love working with my two posts. We work together really good. We’ve got a lot of height, so it’s perfect,” Annerino said after the Spartans’ 75-38 win over Romeoville Monday in the Oak Lawn Varsity Girls Holiday Tournament.

Markusic was a monster in the middle for the Oak Lawn (11-0) with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Mahmoud added 12 points and six rebounds while Annerino’s backcourt partner, LaTondra Brooks, scored 20 points and had eight steals.

Romeoville (4-5) was paced by Jamie Hopper (19 points) and Cherish Smith (seven rebounds).

Annerino and Brooks combined for nine assists as Oak Lawn started with a first quarter that was close to perfect and ended with the hosts in command 28-8.

Oak Lawn missed only five shots, and scored on its first 15 possessions. On the first two, Annerino and Brooks sliced through the lane, drew fouls and hit free throws, but there were plenty of feeds to the posts as Mahmoud scored 10 points and Markusic nine.

Mahmoud turned two of the misses into putbacks. At the other end, Oak Lawn’s defense forced eight Romeoville turnovers.

Romeoville found a bit of rhythm in the second quarter, but was hit by a 10-of-12 Oak Lawn shooting blast at the start of the second half.

“It’s a good team,” Mahmoud said of the best start to a season in Oak Lawn history. “It’s exciting to have a winning record, it’s exciting for my teammates. I love it.”

The slow starts are a trend that Romeoville coach Julio Carrasco wants to stop.

“It’s not just this tournament,” he said. “We played Plainfield Central and Plainfield South and we were down 15-3, 13-2. Fortunately we were able to come back in those games, but against a team like this you can’t get out of the hole.

“We’re just not starting off well, not getting into an offense. Other than that, Oak Lawn’s a heck of a team.”

Sandburg 53, De La Salle 43: Sandburg (7-2) needed overtime to claim the victory behind Sam Youngwirth (21 points), Julia Ruzevich (12 points) and Victoria Stavropoulos. Chardanae Hamilton scored 15 points for De La Salle (7-4).

Lincoln-Way North 55, Riverside-Brookfield 29: Kayla Kieklak scored 16 points and Sam Pietruszynski 10 as North improved to 6-3. Janae Dabney tallied 11 points for Riverside-Brookfield (10-1).

Rich East 60, Richards 40: Ashley Dennis (24 points) and Carmari Lloyd (15 points) keyed Rich East (5-4). Sydni Tears scored 21 points for Richards (3-6).
