CHICAGO – The Lyons boys bowling team entered the St. Patrick Sectional as the favorite to hoist the team title, having earned the highest regional score of all the teams who were scheduled to compete at Habetler Bowl on Saturday.
The Lions lived up to those expectations, finishing with 6,344 pins at the sectional. They built a 361-pin lead after the third game en route to a comfortable victory over second-place New Trier (5,926 pins).
Bowling a season-best game of 1,206 in the third game “gave us some momentum and we just kept rolling,” Lyons senior Mike Kicmal said.
Lyons and New Trier earned two of the six team berths for state. The top six was rounded out by Young (5,806), Niles North (5,756), Notre Dame (5,751) and St. Patrick (5,718).
Kicmal (1,402) and senior teammate John Yanulis (1,381) were two of the meet's three highest-scoring bowlers on Saturday.
Glenbrook North junior Corey Kahen earned the meet's individual title. Kahen finished with a season-best score of 1,475, which included a perfect 300 in his fourth game.
“I felt like I really matched up with the conditions out there,” Kahen said. “I got into a roll. I just kept it cool. I wasn't really worrying about anyone around me. … I hit my mark, and it ended up working out pretty well, I guess.”
Kahen locked up one of the meet's seven automatic state berths granted to individuals.
The two-day state meet is scheduled to take place at St. Clair Bowl in O'Fallon on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
