Elmwood Park's Ben Vazquez, Fenton's Oscar Ledezma, and St. Patrick's Anthony Jarvis also won individual titles.

ELMWOOD PARK — Montini competes against a brutal schedule all season, wrestling some of the best teams and individuals across the Midwest at high-profile meets and tournaments.

The Broncos didn't face that type of competition at the Class 2A Elmwood Park Regional on Saturday, and they won 11 individual titles. Montini accumulated 286 points to finish in first place by 161.5 points over second-place Fenton (124.5 points).

Although the quality of the field at the regional wasn't comparable to what the Broncos are accustomed to wrestling, they tried not to treat it any different.

“Coming to regionals, it isn't the level of competition of Ironman or Cheesehead or Dvorak, but you've still got to be up for these matches because it's the IHSA state series and you've got to wrestle your best,” Montini junior heavyweight Michael Johnson said. “Even if you're not up against the best opponent, you've got to do everything right or you could really get taken advantage of in those situations.”

Johnson ended the meet standing atop the medal stand like 10 of his teammates before him. The following Montini wrestlers also won individual titles: sophomore Jimmy Pawelski (106 pounds), sophomore Dylan Duncan (120), senior Kegan Calkins (126), junior Vince Turk (138), senior Chris Garcia (145), junior Luke Fortuna (152), junior Xavier Montalvo (170), senior Derrick Curry (182), senior Anthony Ferraro (195) and senior Edgar Ruano (220).

Elmwood Park senior Ben Vazquez won the regional title at 113, Fenton junior Oscar Ledezma was victorious at 132 and St. Patrick junior Anthony Jarvis won at 160.

Glenbard South (81.5 points) finished third and St. Patrick was fourth (79) in the team standings. Elmwood Park and Ridgewood finished in a tie for fifth with 70 points. Fenwick was seventh (57), St. Francis took eighth (55) and VOISE Academy placed ninth (28).
