Yorkville used its significant size advantage to east past Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival Rochelle 64-50 Monday evening. Kyle Shimp, a 6-6 forward, finished with a game-high 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Finding itself with a rare height advantage, Yorkville took advantage Monday in a 64-50 Northern Illinois Big 12 East victory over Rochelle.

The Hubs lost 6-5 sophomore post player Tim Monfills to shoulder surgery earlier in the year and didn’t have a player taller than 6-foot on the floor. The Foxes capitalized by pounding the ball inside to 6-6 Kyle Shimp or letting 5-9 guard Josh Bondurant take advantage of his quickness and drive to the basket.

“Kyle has done a good job of establishing himself inside the last couple games,” Yorkville coach Dan McGuire said. “Cedric (Payne) is a tremendous passer and found him several times and then Josh took it to the basket strong.”

Shimp finished with a game-high 21 points and Bondurnt added 15. Each of them had nine rebounds to lead the Foxes to a 42-27 advantage on the boards.

Yorkville (13-13, 4-5) jumped out to a 12-6 lead after one quarter and upped the margin to 30-21 at the break, limiting the Hubs to just 20-percent shooting (5-of-25) in the half.

Rochelle warmed a bit in the third, pulling within 32-29 on back-to-back three-pointers by Aaron Mehrings and Tyler Joyce, but Bondurant answered with back-to-back baskets and Nick Firrantello added a three-point play as Yorkvilled pushed the margin back to 11 at 46-35 entering the fourth quarter.

Mehrings led Rochelle (4-21, 0-9) with 16 points and senior Angel Burciaga added 15. Joyce finished with nine off the bench.
