The Maine boys hockey team tied Sunday's varsity combined state semifinal with 21 seconds remaining in the third period, but Glenbard scored with 2.8 seconds left to crush Maine's comeback bid at the Edge II Ice Arena in Bensenville. Glenbard advanced to play Waubonsie in the state final at 8:45 p.m. Thursday at the United Center.
Glenbard won the center face-off with 21 seconds remaining and made one last rush. It ended with freshman forward Ryan Kelly scoring a game-winning goal in front of the net with 2.8 seconds left.
Glenbard sophomore forwards Matthew Letmanski and Samuel Weiss scored in the first and second periods, respectively. Also, Glenbard senior goalie Joel Mayo saved 29 of Maine's 31 shots.
BY THE NUMBERS
Maine senior forward Derek Dyball scored on a power play with four minutes left to pull his team within a goal. Then, with 21 seconds left and a sixth Maine attacker on the ice, senior forward Jake Usher tied the game, putting in a rebound. Glenbard went 0-for-4 on power play opportunities.
