St. Patrick 11, Niles North 8
The Shamrocks baseball team trailed 8-3 going into the home half of the sixth inning Friday, but they scored eight runs off Niles North senior right-hander Ari Cone. Junior Ken Serwa capped the rally with a grand slam. The Vikings (6-6), who had taken the lead after a four-run fifth that chased St. Patrick senior starter Patrick Moriarty, had the tying run at the plate in the seventh after putting their first two runners on. However, senior Chris Rieger struck out the next three batters to end the game at Memorial Park in Bellwood.
That big sixth inning for the Shamrocks (6-3) started innocently enough with two consecutive singles, but St. Patrick kept piling it on against Cone as 10 consecutive batters reached base.
While it was a team effort with every St. Patrick starter recording at least one hit, junior Anthony Bosco went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and three runs scored.
BY THE NUMBERS
Serwa was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts before his go-ahead grand slam.
“This year we’ve got a great group of senior leaders that lead by example. I just told them [after the game] that they didn’t have to get up there and be rah-rah. They know no one is going to give them anything. ... If they are going to get it, they have to go up there and get it.” — Shamrocks coach Dan Kusinski
