THE SKINNY

Down 2-0 in the fifth, the Fenwick softball team rallied for five runs in a two-out rally and went on to earn a nonconference victory Thursday evening against Loyola in River Forest.

TURNING POINT

Senior Jenna Cairo started off the fifth for Fenwick (11-14) with a single and was moved over to third on consecutive bunts. After a walk, junior Valerie Perrelli hit a two-run double to left to tie the game. The next batter, senior Michelle Lang, drove in the go-ahead run with a single, and two batters after that, freshman Natalie Cairo hit a two-run double to cap the inning.

THE STARS

Fenwick's Jenna Cairo went 3-for-4 with a double and a sixth-inning home run. Lang got on base in all four plate appearances (2-for-2 with two walks). Loyola (8-7) freshman Darice Wheeler hit a two-run homer and finished 2-for-2 with a walk.

BY THE NUMBERS

Perrelli pitched a complete game and struck out 11 batters.

QUOTABLE

"We told the kids get up in the box and close to the plate because [Loyola senior pitcher Jamie] Kiefer was throwing everything on the outside. We wanted to take that away." — Fenwick coach Mike Marrese on fifth-inning adjustments
