The Courier-News' three things to know

By Gary Larsen

Check out the three things the Courier News learned in the past week of the softball season.

1. The Hawks are soaring. Bartlett is on an eight-game win streak, and has won 14 of its last 15 after capturing a tournament at Rolling Meadows, prevailing by mercy rule once over Metea Valley and then twice over East Aurora. Pitcher Holly Pagan improved to 14-4 in the win over Metea, while Amy Johnson and Danielle Kirby pitched wins over East Aurora. In its last six games, Bartlett has outscored opponents 79-5.

2. St. Edward is finding its groove. The Green Wave beat Marian Central, Rosary, Elgin and Chicago Christian in a recent four-game stretch, led offensively by Nos. 1-4 hitters Ryan Scully, Jasmine DeLeon, Lindsey Zdroik and Allison Stratman. “They’re gaining a lot more confidence and you can see it when they’re playing,” St. Edward coach Jaci Corn said. “We’ve been stressing staying aggressive at the plate and staying ahead in the count and we’ve been hitting well.”

3. The Saints are on the mend. Since losing 5-1 to rival St. Charles North, St. Charles East won five consecutive games through May 9, four of which came by mercy rule. The Saints edged rival Geneva 4-3 with Haley Beno on the mound and Mackenzie Lofgren belting a homer. In two wins over Streamwood and one apiece against Batavia and Elgin, East posted a 54-4 scoring edge in Upstate Eight play.
