The SouthtownStar’s three things to know

By Steve Millar

Check out the three things the SouthtownStar learned in the past week of the girls soccer season.

1. Lincoln-Way Central has arrived. The Knights’ potential was clear from the beginning of the season, but they struggled to put it all together. Until last week, that is, when Central knocked off Lincoln-Way West 1-0 and Andrew 2-1. The Knights improved to 4-1 in SouthWest Suburban Red play and will share the conference crown with Lincoln-Way North if they can beat the Phoenix on Wednesday.

2. It takes a lot to score on Lincoln-Way North. North’s shutout of Bradley on Thursday was the team’s 12th of the season and sixth in a row. Bethany Dombkowski has been a rock in goal, and the back line anchored by Lexi Cesario has been fantastic as well. Defense is the major reason the Phoenix is the top seed in the Class 3A Andrew Sectional.

3. Andi Hernandez and Adrianna Vera are terrorizing Southland Conference defenses. Crete-Monee’s Vera recorded a hat trick against Kankakee and scored four times against Rich East last week. Bloom’s Hernandez combined for four goals and six assists over two games, against Rich Central and Rich South. The pair will face off Tuesday in Crete with Bloom looking to wrap up the outright Southland title and the Warriors fighting for a share.
