Bremen Co-op’s Hannah Schultz wreaked havoc from start to finish Friday, drilling eight goals as the Braves defeated Sandburg 11-10 in a thrilling Stagg Sectional semifinal.

Bremen Co-op’s Hannah Schultz called Friday night’s clash with Sandburg “a little personal.”

“They crushed us at the beginning of the year and I got kicked out in the second quarter,” Schultz said. “I was like, ‘I’m staying in the whole game this time.’”

Schultz wreaked havoc from start to finish, drilling eight goals as Bremen defeated Sandburg 11-10 in a thrilling Stagg Sectional semifinal.

Schultz scored four of Bremen’s first five goals as the Braves took a 5-1 lead. She later buried two in the fourth quarter to give Bremen 9-7 and 10-8 advantages.

"Hannah’s one of the best players in the state,” Bremen coach Todd Strein said. “There’s not one person that can defend her one-on-one.”

Sarah Minnich added two goals for Bremen (24-7) while Melissa Barrios made 13 saves at the net.

Trailing 6-1 in the second quarter, Sandburg rallied behind Sarah Dolitsky’s six goals. The Eagles (21-10) made it 6-all on a goal from Caitlyn Olson early in the third, but Schultz responded with two straight.

“Giving up the lead was like a shot to our pride,” Schultz said. “But I told the girls to keep their heads up and keep playing hard.”

Sandburg cut Bremen’s lead to a single goal on four separate occasions in the fourth but could never bring it to even. The final nail in the coffin was a deep Minnich goal midway through the fourth quarter to give Bremen an 11-9 lead.

“These girls have played for each other all season,” Sandburg coach Sofia Pappanastos said. “I’m really proud of the way they fought back.”

Mother McAuley 18, Richards Co-op 6

Richards’ Misty Gardner struck first, but Mother McAuley’s dynamic duo of Fran Williamson and Clare Bryar struck often.

Williamson scored eight goals, Bryar had four and McAuley downed Richards 18-6 on Friday night in a Stagg Sectional semifinal.

McAuley (22-7) will look for its fourth straight sectional title Saturday against Bremen Co-op. The Mighty Macs finished third in state last season.

Gardner finished with four goals for Richards (7-20) and Sarah Coffman had two.
