Logan Malloy breaks down three things you should know about area boys volleyball, including a Marist squad looking to surprise some teams.

Three Things Learned

1. Marist hopes to pull a few upsets. Seeded No. 11 in its own sectional, the RedHawks first find themselves in the loaded Marian Regional alongside No. 3 Lincoln-Way North and No. 6 Lincoln-Way West. Marist should call on lefty Jake Moran early and often if an upset is in the cards. “He’s definitely been our leader all year,” Marist coach Jodi Frigo said. “He plays strong and plays with confidence. He’s just a good kid that wants to win.”

2. A strong field showed up at Richards. Brother Rice’s Mitch Weiler and Kevin Myren headlined the 12-team Richards Invitational All-Tournament team on Saturday. Weiler earned MVP honors in leading the Crusaders past Lyons for its third tournament title of the year. Lincoln-Way West’s Michael Wexter, St. Rita’s Nick Spallina and Richards’ Edvinas Karalius also earned all-tourney nods. Richards, which topped Downers Grove North and Stagg on Day 1, reached the 20-win mark for the fourth straight season.

3. There's a benefit at Lewis. Providence coach Brett Krapil and Sandburg coach Sean Airola are buddies from their days playing at Providence. The duo is once again spearheading a match for charity at Lewis University. Sandburg meets Providence 7 p.m. Tuesday with all proceeds going to the Tom Barrett Memorial Student Council Scholarship. Barrett was a theology teacher at Providence who recently passed away. Tickets for the match can be purchased at the door.
