Bill Harrison takes a look at three notable things to know from the world of area softball.

No. 1: Benet could break the state home run record. With a full schedule of games this week, the Redwings (57 home runs) could threaten the state record of 60 set last season by Trinity. Leading the way and just four shy of the individual state record of 24 is junior Stephanie Abello. The Illinois recruit hit No. 20 on Saturday — a grand slam against Bishop McNamara. Emily York has nine while Marissa Panko and Julianne Rurka each have eight.

No. 2: Class 3A regional pairings have supersectional-like matchups. Manteno and Lincoln-Way West will likely meet for the Lincoln-Way West regional title, while Peotone and Marian Catholic will likely meet in the Marian Catholic regional final. All four teams could be seriously considered as a state contender in 3A, but only two will make it out of regionals.

No. 3: Sarah Crews is pretty good, too. Freshman Taylor Johnson’s .618 average and 14 homers have overshadowed Crews this season. But the senior is hitting .585 with nine home runs and 55 RBI to go with an 18-2 pitching record and a 1.96 ERA. She has struck out 110 batters while walking just 21.
