With just three seniors on its roster, Brother Rice has a bright future. Finding a way to get to state after entering the postseason with an 8-17 record should prove quite valuable for the Crusaders’ young players in spite of a 12-7 quarterfinal loss to Stevenson.
“We’re still building,” Rice coach Tony Cichowicz said. “We have lots of sophomores and juniors and we got to show the young guys what this is all about. It’s so hard here. The atmosphere is crazy. It’s a good learning experience.”
The Crusaders will lose goalie Kevin Kenny and their second- and third-leading scorers, Dan Whalen and Dan Birmingham, but expect to return top scorer Matt Bachler and talented youngsters Luke Healy and Peter Gurka.
“We were very happy to get to state,” Bachler said. “It was a rocky season, but we worked our butts off to get here. Hopefully, we’ll be ready to make it back next year.”
