Fenwick pitchers Jessica Mrozek and Valerie Perrelli combined for a no-hitter in an 11-0 victory over Von Steuben in the Class 4A Oak Park Regional semifinals Tuesday at Fenwick. Von Steuben got its only baserunner on a disputed dropped third strike in the fifth. No. 3 seed Fenwick will play the winner of Wednesday's matchup between No. 6 Leyden and No. 11 Taft in the finals on Saturday in Oak Park.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, Fenwick got nine consecutive runners on base and scored seven runs. Senior Ashley Parenti hit a three-run double and scored on an error, freshman Natalie Cairo hit a two-run single and senior Jenna Cairo hit a two-run double.
Mrozek, a senior, started the game and retired all nine batters she saw. Then, junior Perrelli entered and struck out all seven batters she faced over the last two innings.
BY THE NUMBERS
Von Steuben pitchers combined to hit three Fenwick batters and walk four others.
"They're two different styles. Jess is more of a breaking ball-type pitcher where Val is more of a power pitcher. I think giving another team those two different looks really, really makes them uncomfortable." — Fenwick coach Mike Marrese
