Marist's Brooke Wyderski blasted a two-out, bottom-of-the-seventh home run to send Saturday's Class 4A regional title game to extras. Alexis Rogers then hit the game-winner in the 10th to give the host RedHawks a 6-5 victory over Lyons.

Marist’s Brooke Wyderski wasn’t ready to close the books on a distinguished high school career.

With Marist trailing by a run in the bottom of the seventh to Lyons and down to its last out, Wyderski went opposite field with a bomb of a home run to force extra innings.

Three innings later, freshman Alexis Rogers ripped a walk-off single to left to bring home the winning run as top-seeded Marist survived the upset bid by Lyons with a 6-5 win in 10 innings for the Class 4A Marist Regional title.

Marist (28-8-1) advances to Tuesday’s Reavis Sectional, where the RedHawks will face Richards, a 4-1 winner over Shepard. Lyons goes home at 10-20-2.

“Two outs, and I didn’t want it to be my last at-bat of the season [and my career],” Wyderski said. “I wanted that win. Everyone on the team did.”

“We had to do battle, win the game,” Rogers said. “Win it together as a team. We didn’t want to go home.”

Marist, which at one point led 4-0, watched Lyons claw back into the game, finally going up 5-4 on a Riley Frisbie two-run homer in the sixth.

Down to their last bullet in the seventh, the RedHawks turned to Wyderski. Rather than walk the slugging shortstop, Lyons pitched to her. On a 2-and-0 count, Wyderski teed off on the pitch, tying the game with her dinger to right.

“It was a strike,” Wyderski said with a smile.

Marist threatened in both the eighth and ninth, stranding three runners, before Rogers came through in the bottom of the 10th. With runners at second and third, the freshman’s hard-hit single to left brought Vanessa Villasenor home for the game-winner.

“I knew I had to get the job done,” Rogers said. “We’ve got to move on and keep winning.”

Zariya Gonzalez threw all 10 innings for Marist, allowing five runs on 10 hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.

Madison Naujokas had two RBI and two doubles for the RedHawks. Wyderski finished 2-for-3 with two runs.

“This teaches us a lesson,” Naujokas said. “We need to go into every game strong and not doubt any team. Know that it’s playoffs. Anyone can beat anyone. For Brooke to come up and do what she can do, she helped us out and kept us in the game.”
