St. Joseph turns to its sophomore coach after Jim Maley leaves to coach with his son at St. Laurence.

Drew Winston, who finished 17-6 during his first season as sophomore coach in Westchester, is replacing Jim Maley, who left St. Joe to coach with his father at St. Laurence.

Winston, 37, played basketball at Proviso East and, after graduating in 1995, played two years at Grambling. After college, he coached a seventh-grade boys feeder team in Addison.

He is the founder of the Chicago Xtreme AAU girls basketball program. He has coached other travel teams, including the Lady Lightning and the Glen Ellyn Titans.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity,” Winston said. “I’m really excited about this situation.”

Winston expects to build the program next season around his incoming juniors.

“[Now I’m installing] my own system and teaching the girls the fundamentals of basketball,” Winston said.
