Northbrook's Nick Hardy tied for eighth after Day 1 at Western Amateur

Recent Buffalo Grove graduate Doug Ghim shot 69 and is tied for 11th, along with defending champion Jordan Niebrugge.

Northbrook's Nick Hardy opened the first round of the Western Amateur on Monday with a 3-under 68 and is three strokes behind co-leaders Zecheng Dou and Geoff Drakeford.

The Illinois-bound Hardy made five birdies and two bogeys at Chicago's Beverly Country Club and is tied for eighth going into Wednesday's cut day. The low 44 players after 36 holes advance to Thursday.

Arlington Heights resident and recent Buffalo Grove graduate Doug Ghim shot 69 and is tied for 11th, along with defending champion Jordan Niebrugge.
Other local players include Lake Forest's Andrew Price, who shot 70, and Lincolnshire's Jack Watson, who carded a 74.
