Marian Catholic didn’t have to look very far to find its new baseball coach.

Marian Catholic didn’t have to look very far to find its new baseball coach.

Tony DeCarlo, an assistant at the Chicago Heights school the past three seasons, takes over for Phil Wail, who resigned.

“It’s an honor to take over this position,” DeCarlo said. “I’m excited. There are going to be a lot of changes. There’s going to be a lot more energy and a lot more enthusiasm. It’s going to be a challenge, but one I’m looking forward to.”

DeCarlo, a St. Laurence graduate, inherits a team that finished 15-21 overall and 7-9 in the East Suburban Catholic in 2014. Prior to landing at Marian Catholic, he was sophomore coach at St. Laurence from 2008 through ’11.

He plans to hit the ground running.

“I have to bring kids in and build the program,” said DeCarlo, who thanked his wife, Julie, for her unwavering support. “Make sure the kids we have are prepared and ready to go. We’re going to be young, but that doesn’t mean we can’t accomplish our goals.”

Wail, a 1998 Marian grad, registered a 102-121 record in six seasons. The highlight came in 2012, when the Spartans, just 17-17 entering the playoffs, recorded eight consecutive wins to claim the Class 3A state championship.

Dave Mattio, Marian Catholic’s athletic director, welcomed DeCarlo while praising Wail.

“His (Wail’s) tenure was marked by success and growth — both on the field and in the facilities area,” Mattio said in a news release. “He is to be commended for his ownership of the program, his energy to improve the program, and his initiatives to improve facilities.

“Tony will bring an instant energy to the program. He has set a vision for the baseball program. He will work to hire and train individuals to implement that vision. He has committed to work the process to completion.”
